Painting Vinyl Siding?

My friend asked me the other day “Can you paint vinyl siding?” and I answered him "Sure, but you may want to think twice before doing it because it will cost a lot more in the end!"

Many homeowners wonder if painting their existing vinyl siding is the best solution to their color fading woes that has become the inevitable with vinyl siding, but come to find out that their best option is to replace the siding as a whole for these reasons:

  • Paint on vinyl siding leads to numerous issues because there are not any compatible paints on the market that are suitable for all vinyl siding. Vinyl is a material that is very flexible under certain conditions.
  • In comparison to wood products, which is well-suited for painting, vinyl siding tends to absorb more heat.Vinyl Siding problems

When vinyl is exposed to direct sunlight or high temperatures the material can expand and contract with measurements as much as an inch! When painted over, that paint is not able to expand and contract along with the vinyl and thus cracks and weakening of the material occurs.

  • Vinyl siding will become chalky after years of weathering, but will further weaken if painted over because the siding was not originally intended in its design to withstand the chemical reactions with ultra-violet sunlight that the paint will cause.
  • It is very time consuming and tedious to paint an entire home and is not worth the effort if only within a short period of time wear and tear; the paint will crack or peel.
  • Painting does not fix already cracked and damaged pieces of vinyl.
  • Many homeowners find that painting over vinyl makes for a temporary fix that will cost more in the end.
