Choosing the Best Siding: Vinyl or Fiber Cement or Neither?

Wed, Sep 27, 2017

Composite siding massMost homeowners aren't fully aware of what their options are when it comes to new siding.  Depending on which region of the country you live in, your choices may be different.  Vinyl siding is the most widely used siding type although fiber cement siding has made a name for itself over the past 10 years or so.  Other composite sidings are newer, but have been in development for several years.  It would be foolish to say that neither vinyl or cement board siding are good because it really depends on what you as a homeowner are trying to accomplish.  What are your goals for the exterior of your home?

When it comes to choosing siding ask yourself these 3 questions:

What's more important?

  1. Lower initial cost, or most wood-like aesthetics?
  2. Lower maintenance with 1 color, or "I don't mind some maintenance if I can change the color?"
  3. A quick and easy installation, or "I don't care as long as it looks good?"

Answering these 3 questions should put you on the right path towards choosing the best siding, vinyl, fiber cement, or neither.

If you answered lower initial cost, lower maintenance, and quick installation, then vinyl siding might be the best option for you.

If you answered, most wood-like aesthetics, "I don't mind some siding maintenance if I can change the color," and "I don't care as long as the siding looks good."  Then fiber cement might be the best option for you.

Both vinyl siding and fiber cement siding have their benefits, but when I have the opportunity to show a homeowner Everlast Siding, they almost always think it's a good balance of the other options.
